What is the Surprising Origin of the Modern Potato Chip?

Category: Food > Chips

The modern potato chip was invented in the mid-19th century by George Crum, a chef at Moon's Lake House in Saratoga Springs, New York. The story goes that a disgruntled customer repeatedly complained about the thickness of the fried potatoes served to him. In an effort to appease the patron, Crum decided to slice the potatoes paper-thin, fry them until they were crisp, and season them with extra salt. To his surprise, the customer loved the new creation, and the "Saratoga Chips" quickly gained popularity, leading to the birth of the potato chip as we know it today. This snack has since evolved into a multi-billion dollar industry, with countless flavors and varieties enjoyed around the world.
